As the work progressed, we discovered an old double-line wire fence running through the centre of the bramble-filled area. This slowed the job down, as it had to be removed carefully by hand.

Once we had removed the wire and opened up the area properly, we were able to continue cutting and clearing the windblown branches and overgrown vegetation.

The spruce tree was topped out and effectively removed as part of the hedge improvement works. The Leylandii hedge was then reduced back to older growth, close to where it had been cut many years before. This kind of hedge reduction must be done carefully, especially with Leylandii, as cutting too hard into old brown wood can leave a poor finish.
The hedge came out well and, most importantly for the client, it opened up the west-facing evening sunlight again.
That was a big win.

This included removing cotoneaster and hydrangeas, reducing elder bushes, and tidying overgrown beds. In some areas where hydrangeas had been removed and the client did not want them to return, we used mulch as a neat ground dressing.
Mulching over beds can help suppress regrowth, improve the appearance of the area, and make the garden feel more finished. Once spread evenly, the mulch gave the beds a clean and natural look.

The job was completed on Friday, 29 May, just before the bank holiday weekend. We were glad to get finished at a reasonable time and give the crew an early finish after a hard few days on site.
