Tree Surgery, Tree Cutting and Garden Clearance in Ballyshonin, Cork

At Rebel Tree Care Limited, every job has its own character. Some are technical climbing jobs, some are large tree removals, some are hedge reductions, and others are a full mix of tree surgery, tree cutting, garden clearance, wood mulching, pruning, and careful tidy-up work.

This recent project in Ballyshonin, just outside Cork City and not far from Tower, was a great example of that full-service approach.

Rebel Tree Care was contacted by a lovely client, Joan, who we had originally met a couple of years previously to look at some tree work around her property. In early spring, she got back in touch with us to revisit the original work and to discuss some additional tree surgery, tree removal, pruning, bramble clearance, hedge cutting, and general garden improvement works.

The property was a detached countryside bungalow on a beautiful rural site. Like many mature gardens around Cork, it had great potential, but some areas had become overgrown and difficult to manage. The back of the property, particularly along the north-facing side of the house, had a line of very tall, heavy, overgrown Thuja and cypress trees. These trees were dense, around 40 feet high in places, and had become crowded together over time.

A lot of the lower canopy and branches had ripped out, collapsed in on themselves, or fallen into thick bramble growth. In some areas, the brambles were around eight feet high. It had become a difficult space to access, maintain, or enjoy properly.

Our recommendation to Joan was to create more natural spacing between the Thuja and cypress trees. Rather than simply cutting everything back harshly, we wanted to open up the rear garden so that it could be seen and enjoyed from the house again. By selectively removing some of the trees, tidying up broken and windblown limbs, removing dead branches, and clearing the brambles, the garden could be made brighter, safer, and much more usable.

This is the kind of practical tree care that Rebel Tree Care Cork carries out regularly, combining tree surgery, tree cutting, tree removal, pruning, hedge work, garden clearance, and wood mulching to improve both safety and appearance.

Tree Surgery and Tree Cutting in Cork

Opening Up the Rear Garden

On the first day, the crew got straight into the work. It was a very warm day, and the site required plenty of hard cutting, dragging, mulching, and chainsaw work.

The rear section of the garden contained heavy bramble growth, broken branches, windblown material, and a lot of tangled vegetation. There were also two sheds in the background that had become partly enclosed by the surrounding growth.

We began by cutting access through the brambles and clearing around the sheds. This allowed us to create safe working space and begin dealing with the damaged trees properly. Once the area was opened up, the difference was immediate. Light started coming back into the garden, and the structure of the space became visible again.

The job involved a combination of chainsaw cutting, branch removal, bramble clearance, wood mulching, and careful sorting of usable timber. All timber was left stacked neatly on site as agreed with the client, while branches and smaller material were processed through the tracked wood mulcher where appropriate.

For clients looking for tree cutting in Cork, garden clearance in Cork, or tree surgery in Cork, this type of job shows how much of a transformation can be achieved when the work is planned properly.

Tracked Wood Mulching on Site

A big part of the job involved using our tracked wood mulcher.

For a professional tree surgery business like Rebel Tree Care Limited, having the right machinery on site makes a huge difference. A tracked wood mulcher can move across uneven ground, access awkward areas, and process large volumes of branches and brash efficiently. This is especially useful on rural properties, mature gardens, overgrown sites, and jobs where branches need to be dealt with quickly and cleanly.

During the job, the mulcher briefly overheated, which created a bit of pressure on site. When you are in the middle of a busy tree care job, machinery downtime can affect the whole flow of the work. We checked the coolant, allowed the machine to cool, cleaned dust and debris from the radiator area, and later used compressed air to clear the fins more thoroughly.

Once the cooling issue was dealt with, the machine ran well again and the job continued smoothly.

This is part of the reality of professional tree surgery and tree removal work. It is not just about climbing trees and cutting branches. It is also about maintaining machinery, solving problems on site, keeping the job moving, and making sure the client gets a tidy, efficient result.

At Rebel Tree Care Cork, we rely on sharp saws, reliable machinery, good planning, and practical problem-solving to complete work safely and efficiently.

Dealing With Old Fencing, Windblow and Brambles

As the work progressed, we discovered an old double-line wire fence running through the centre of the bramble-filled area. This slowed the job down, as it had to be removed carefully by hand.

Old fencing hidden inside brambles or hedges can be a real hazard. It can catch on machinery, damage chainsaw chains, create trip hazards, and make clearance work much slower. Once we had removed the wire and opened up the area properly, we were able to continue cutting and clearing the windblown branches and overgrown vegetation.

There was also a lovely old apple orchard on site. The apple trees looked like they still had good potential, and clearing the surrounding growth helped to improve access and light around them.

This is where thoughtful tree care is important. Not every job is about removing everything. A good arborist or tree surgeon looks at the site as a whole and decides what should be removed, what should be retained, and what can be improved.

Leylandii Hedge Reduction and Spruce Removal

Another major part of the job involved a long Leylandii hedge with a large spruce tree protruding out of it.

Before carrying out any cutting, we inspected the spruce and the top of the hedge for nesting birds. Once we were satisfied that the area was clear, we proceeded with the work.

The spruce tree was topped out and effectively removed as part of the hedge improvement works. The Leylandii hedge was then reduced back to older growth, close to where it had been cut many years before. This kind of hedge reduction must be done carefully, especially with Leylandii, as cutting too hard into old brown wood can leave a poor finish.

The hedge came out well and, most importantly for the client, it opened up the west-facing evening sunlight again.

That was a big win.

For many homeowners, tree pruning, hedge cutting, and tree reduction are not just about appearance. They are about getting light back into the garden, improving how the property feels, reducing maintenance, and making outdoor spaces more enjoyable.

Rebel Tree Care provides hedge cutting, hedge reduction, tree pruning, tree cutting, and tree care in Cork for domestic and commercial clients who want practical, professional results.

Shrub Reductions, Hydrangea Clearance and Mulching

Alongside the tree work, we also carried out some smaller but important garden clearance tasks.

This included removing cotoneaster and hydrangeas, reducing elder bushes, and tidying overgrown beds. In some areas where hydrangeas had been removed and the client did not want them to return, we used mulch as a neat ground dressing.

Mulching over beds can help suppress regrowth, improve the appearance of the area, and make the garden feel more finished. Once spread evenly, the mulch gave the beds a clean and natural look.

This is the kind of finishing work that makes a big difference. A tree surgery job should not just be judged by what is cut down. It should also be judged by how the site is left afterwards.

At the end of the job, we raked, blew, and tidied the work areas carefully, leaving the garden clean and presentable.

Roadside Ash Tree With Ash Dieback

Another important part of the project involved a roadside ash tree.

The ash was showing signs consistent with ash dieback, caused by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. Ash dieback is now a major issue across Ireland and the UK, and it can create serious safety concerns, particularly when ash trees are growing beside roads, driveways, public access routes, houses, sheds, or gardens.

This particular ash had limbs extending towards the roadside, and one limb in particular had a significant split. It was in poor condition and could have failed towards the road, potentially creating a danger for passing traffic or pedestrians.

Rather than removing the whole tree at this stage, we carried out remedial tree surgery. This involved reducing weight from the heaviest limbs, removing deadwood, and cutting back roadside branches where needed. The aim was to reduce immediate risk and make the tree safer while retaining as much of it as reasonably possible.

This type of work is a good example of professional tree care. Tree removal is sometimes necessary, especially with dangerous trees, dead trees, or badly diseased trees. However, where appropriate, tree reduction, pruning, crown reduction, weight reduction, and deadwood removal can all be used to manage risk without fully removing the tree.

For anyone concerned about ash dieback, dangerous roadside trees, cracked limbs, or storm-damaged trees in Cork, Rebel Tree Care Limited can inspect the tree and recommend the most suitable course of action.

A Tidy Finish Before the Bank Holiday Weekend

The job was completed on Friday, 29 May, just before the bank holiday weekend. We were glad to get finished at a reasonable time and give the crew an early finish after a hard few days on site.

The client was very happy with the result. The rear garden was opened up, the brambles were cleared, the Thuja and cypress area was made more manageable, the Leylandii hedge was reduced, the evening sunlight was restored, the roadside ash was made safer, and the whole site was left clean and tidy.

The timber was stacked neatly as agreed, the mulch was spread where useful, and the garden felt much more open, brighter, and easier to manage.

That is what good tree surgery and tree care should achieve. It should make a property safer, cleaner, brighter, and more practical, while respecting the trees and the client’s long-term plans for the space.
